The Iliad & The Odyssey

Iconoclastic Victorian author Samuel Butler (1835-1902) published a variety of works. Two of his most famous pieces are the Utopian satire 'Erewhon' and the posthumous novel 'The Way of All Flesh.' He is also known for examining Christian orthodoxy, substantive studies of Darwin's evolutionary thought, studies of Italian art and aesthetics, and works of literary history and criticism. Butler's prose translations of 'The Iliad' and 'The Odyssey' remain in use to this day.

Butler's translation of 'The Iliad' was originally published in London by Longmans, Green, in 1898. His translation of 'The Odyssey' was also published by Longmans, Green, in 1902.

In this edition, each epic is accompanied by a preface by Butler and a list of Principal Personages in the work.
